Abstract

Background The adoption of robotic technologies has emerged as a trend in libraries worldwide which has continued to provide new possibilities for improving efficiency, user engagement, and service delivery. However, in Nigeria, particularly in federal universities of technology, the integration of such innovations remains limited. Purpose This study investigated the facilitating conditions that influence the adoption of robotic technologies in the libraries of federal universities of technology in Nigeria. Method The study employed a cross-sectional survey design with a population of academic librarians across federal universities of technology in Nigeria. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, validated by experts, and pilot-tested to ensure reliability. A total of 108 responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and linear regression at a 0.05 level of significance. Results Findings revealed that library staff exhibited a very high level of preparedness and held strong positive perceptions of the benefits of robotics, including improved efficiency, workload reduction, and enhanced user satisfaction. However, facilitating conditions were found to be only average, with gaps in infrastructure, funding, and policy support. Challenges such as high costs, lack of skilled personnel, poor ICT infrastructure, and resistance to change were also significant. The results further showed that facilitating conditions significantly influenced the adoption of robotic technologies. Conclusion The study concludes that while librarians are ready and optimistic, systemic barriers hinder adoption. It recommends improved funding, infrastructure, training, leadership support, and policy frameworks to foster successful integration of robotics in Nigerian academic libraries.
