Observational analysis reveals habitat degradation harming waterbird populations, suggesting urgent conservation measures are needed.
Purbasthali wetland has been well known for the good number of different waterbird species it supports especially during winter season as it is regularly used by migratory bird communities as an abode in their wintering ground. Recent increase in imprudent anthropocentric activities has been causing a serious degradation in wetland health condition thereby affecting majority of waterbirds especially migratory ducks and large waders. Though it requires further studies to analyze the effects in coming years, this study is a first-hand report on the conditions of this wetland and its waterbirds after the habitat fragmentation.
