Insertion sequences lowered ceftazidime resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii, suggesting a novel resistance mechanism.
This study describes the effects of the insertion of IS Aba1 in the intrinsic bla ADC gene of an Acinetobacter baumannii isolate showing co-resistance to carbapenems and colistin. Isolate 52971 showed low ceftazidime MIC values due to the disruption of bla ADC-195 by this insertion sequence. The introduction of an intact bla ADC in isolate 52971 increased ceftazidime MIC. The potential of insertion sequences to inactivate chromosome-encoded resistance determinants should be explored.
