Oral administration of soluble sturgeon oil improves colitis and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice, suggesting benefits for inflammatory bowel disease.
Description Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the colonic mucosa. The pathogenesis of UC is closely related to abnormalities in gut microbiota and immune system. Some clinical trials show that fish oil supplementation may be beneficial in reducing inflammation from UC. In this study, we examined the preventive effects and mechanisms of solubilized sturgeon oil (SSO) prepared from sturgeon fish in DSS-induced UC model. Oral administration of SSO significantly reduced colitis severity, alleviating symptoms such as weight loss, colon shortening, gut inflammation, and bloody stools in SSO treated UC mice. The secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines was decreased in SSO-treated dendritic cells and macrophages. Furthermore, transferring fecal microbiota from SSO-treated mice exhibited DSS-induced colitis, suggesting that SSO modulates the intestinal microbiota. Our studies show that SSO effectively alleviates colitis by improving the intestinal microenvironment.
