Narrative review highlights functional connectivity in midbrain and its importance in neurological disorders, suggesting implications for stroke and Parkinson's disease.
As an important component of the motor system, the midbrain motor area integrates the neural impulses transmitted from the higher brain and those from the sensory receptors at the limb termini. It serves as a crucial hub of the nervous system and assists in completing the entire motor process. In this review, we will start from the research on movement and successively discuss the specific definition of the midbrain motor area, the types of neurons, different movements, and the role it plays in the entire movement process through its connections with other brain regions. We can even further discuss their significant roles in medical fields such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease.
