This analysis reveals how mountain-shaped echoes interfere in ultrasonic testing of welds, suggesting effective identification methods.
When testing butt welds using the ultrasonic shear wave (S‐wave) reflection method, due to any unevenness or irregular distribution on the weld cap and root, the ultrasonic beams may undergo reflection, multiple reflection and waveform mode conversion while transmitting to the weld cap and root and entering the interface. In some special situations, these echoes may produce a ‘mountain-shaped echo’, which seriously interferes with the identification of flaw signals. In order to eliminate the influence of this mountain-shaped echo on the ultrasonic testing of welds, this paper introduces the principle, identification and application of the mountain-shaped echo. Through an application case of the mountain-shaped echo in plate weld testing, it demonstrates how to measure, calculate and apply the mountain-shaped echo to resolve interference.
