Ayurveda in Literary Perspective

This study explores Ayurveda from a literary perspective, emphasizing its roots in Tamil tradition through Siddha medicine. Contrary to the common belief that Ayurveda belongs to the Aryans and Siddha to the Tamils, the research shows that the term Ayuru Veda originates from Tamil, not Sanskrit, with evidence from Agathiyar”s works. Siddha medicine predates Ayurveda by thousands of years, with references in Sangam and classical Tamil texts, suggesting that Ayurveda was later adapted from Siddha practices. While Ayurveda primarily focuses on herbal treatments, Siddha encompasses a broader system including alchemy, metals, minerals, yogic practices, and spiritual goals aimed at achieving immortality and divine union. Historical accounts, literary citations, and philosophical insights affirm that Siddha medicine is more ancient, profound, and holistic than Ayurveda, reflecting the Tamil people”s unique worldview that integrates health, spirituality, and longevity.
