Systematic review reveals electron beam irradiation improves properties in dental materials, suggesting enhanced clinical performance.
This systematic review investigates the value addition properties of electron beam irradiation (EBI) on dental materials used in restorative, endodontic, and prosthodontic applications. EBI is a high-energy, non-chemical modification technique capable of inducing cross-linking, chain scission, and surface functionalization in polymers, ceramics, and composites. The review synthesizes in vitro evidence on how EBI alters mechanical, chemical, physical, biological, and aesthetic properties of dental substrates, with implications for improved clinical performance in areas such as guided bone regeneration, antimicrobial efficacy, and restorative durability. By adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines and applying rigorous inclusion/exclusion criteria, this study aims to consolidate fragmented literature, evaluate dose-dependent effects, and identify material-specific responses to EBI, thereby informing future research and clinical translation.
