New approach enhances synthesis of nano-sized barium carbonate with defined characteristics, suggesting improved physicochemical properties.
A new approach to the synthesis of highly dispersed barium carbonate with specified characteristics (bulk density from 0.015 g/cm, particle size in the range of 13–142 nm, isometric habit) was developed. It consists in sequential heat treatment up to 1100°C of a concentrated aqueous-carbohydrate solution of Ba(NO) and D-glucose. The processes of barium carbonate phase formation in the temperature range used (350–1100°C) were studied. The main stages of BaCO synthesis were characterized using physicochemical methods (IR spectroscopy, X-ray phase analysis, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy), as well as chemical analysis.
