The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of three test pits, each measuring 1.5m in length and 1.5m in width. The test pits have been located within and immediately outside of the bounds of the Scheduled Monument, in order to provide a representative sample of the proposed development area. The locations of Test Pits 1 and 3 were altered slightly from those proposed in the WSI in order to avoid garden features. All alterations were made with the prior approval. The test pits were set out and were initially hand-excavated to the depth of the natural substrate. Features/deposits were subsequently investigated, planned and recorded. Deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential but none were identified that required sampling. In June 2025, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at 56 Lamberts Field, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. A total of three test pits were excavated. The evaluation identified widespread evidence of modern disturbance and truncation in all three test pits, comprising the removal of previously existing soils and the excavation of two substantial pits to deposit waste building material. This activity was likely associated with the construction of the houses along Lamberts Field or subsequent landscaping, in the later 20th century. No finds or features pre-dating the modern period were identified during the course of the evaluation.
