Quantitative analysis reveals semantics and evolution of the term ‘nation’ in medieval Catalonia's political context, highlighting its politicisation.
This article presents a quantitative, chronological, linguistic, and semantic analysis of the concept of ‘nation’ as it appears in the minutes of the Peace and Truce Councils and the General Courts and Parliaments of Catalonia between 1173 and 1479. It focuses on the evolution, politicisation and semantics of the concept, distinguishing between meanings that refer to non-Catalan groups and those that directly reference Catalans, whether as natives of the Principality of Catalonia and the counties of Roussillon and Cerdanya, as part of the group of Catalan-speaking Christians or as part or all of the subjects of the Crown of Aragon.
