Preliminary research demonstrates FPGA applications for online tracking in the ATLAS experiment, suggesting promising performance gains.
As part of the ATLAS TDAQ Phase-II upgrade project, the Event Filter Tracking system will allow online tracking for the trigger of the ATLAS experiment in the HL-LHC era. While the system is still under design, this note presents an overview of how FPGA accelerators are envisioned to be potentially used for online track reconstruction. The current preliminary tracking performance of the different options is being compared with the full offline track reconstruction using the new Inner Tracker. It should be noted, that this note represents R&D and not official ATLAS Trigger strategy.Scientific contact person Genest, Marie-Hélène, (genest@lpsc.in2p3.fr)
