Key Points

  • Short-term mortality correlates with admission lactate levels in geriatric ICU patients.
  • A significant connection exists between lactate and mortality, highlighting its predictive value.
  • Analysis across geriatric ICU populations reveals the utility of admission lactate for immediate risk assessment.
  • This finding may enable enhanced clinical decision-making in vulnerable populations, emphasizing the importance of timely lactate assessment.

Abstract

Admission lactate is a simple and readily obtainable biomarker that independently predicts short-term mortality in geriatric ICU patients. While not outperforming established severity scores, lactate provides immediate risk stratification at the bedside and may aid clinical decision-making in this vulnerable population.
