Key Points

  • Substantial improvements in mental health were observed after psychodynamic psychotherapy, highlighting its enduring effects on patients.
  • The findings indicate a significant incremental benefit of psychodynamic approaches, particularly for complex cases and long-term care.
  • Naturalistic study over 6 years evaluated both psychodynamic and analytical psychotherapy in routine care settings.
  • Further research is needed to explore treatment mechanisms and the broader implications for health policy in psychotherapy.

Abstract

Psychoanalytically oriented treatments in routine care are associated with substantial and lasting improvements, even posttreatment. Our findings highlight an incremental benefit of AP over PP, particularly for complex cases. Future research should explore treatment mechanisms, cost-effectiveness, and implications for health policy. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved).
