Key Points

  • Evaluate mobile crisis units (MCUs) and establish a framework for their functions and forms.
  • Conducted a systematic review of existing literature on MCU effectiveness.
  • Developed a theoretical framework for documenting MCU functions and forms.
  • Generated research recommendations to address literature gaps.
  • Limited evidence suggests tentative support for MCU effectiveness.
  • Current literature is insufficient to draw general conclusions.
  • Framework aims to improve service comparability for practitioners and policymakers.

Abstract

The limited evidence uncovered in this review offers tentative support for MCU effectiveness. However, the current literature is too sparse to draw firm or generalized conclusions. An initial theoretical framework was created to help practitioners and policymakers document the functions and forms of MCUs to increase the comparability of these services, and research recommendations were generated to fill gaps in the literature.
