Visual essay reveals ethical dilemmas faced in Lesvos art course with students, highlighting education challenges.
Was it okay to bring the students here? Was it okay to plan to go here again with students working on site‐related art projects? How can art matter here? Such questions I asked myself when organizing a bachelor course on site related art in Lesvos back in 2018 and 2019. The Greek Island was then still heavily affected by the refugee crisis that hit Europe in 2015. In the visual essay I expose the uncertainty and doubt that haunted me before, throughout and after establishing and realizing the course. I focus on incidents from my experiences from Lesvos represented by images and reflections of these. All the events touch upon the ethical dilemmas that both many of the participating artists and I faced. This and other projects have made me call for a pedagogy of dissensus. When dissensus is inspiring education norms and regular ways of teaching are challenged, and possible disruptions of the expected are offered.
