Retrospective analysis shows increased hospitalizations among Black patients with autoimmune blistering disease, indicating health inequities in outcomes.
In this retrospective chart review, we explored racial disparities in a large population of AIBD patients seen at Emory University, with a focus on comorbidities, mortality, and hospitalizations for AIBD. Black patients presented at an earlier age and had higher comorbidities and measures of deprivation which potentially contributed to higher risk of hospitalization and mortality. Black patients also had more than two-fold increased risk of hospitalizations for AIBD than White patients (risk ratio (RR) 2.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.62-3.37; p< 0.001).
