This overview highlights the challenges of managing pain in children with oppositional defiant disorder, indicating that awareness can improve dental team strategies.
Oppositional defiant disorder is classified as a disruptive behavioural disorder and can affect up to 16% of children and adolescents. It can present significant challenges for dental teams because affected children often display uncooperative and defiant behaviours that can hinder routine care. Frequently coexisting with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it can complicate behavioural management in a dental setting, requiring behavioural strategies to ensure successful treatment. This article explores the social, medical and dental impact of oppositional defiant disorder, as well as considerations for the dental team to manage these children, including preventive care, pain management and optimizing the peak efficacy of medications and timing treatment accordingly. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Awareness of the behavioural challenges associated with oppositional defiant disorder will allow the dental team to modify their approach and feel confident to deliver safe and effective dental care.
