A 1-phenoxy-3H-naphtho[1,2,3-de]quinoline-2,7-dione derivative exhibits photochromic properties, forming a colored product with bright orange fluorescence. The latter is a naphtho[1,2,3-de]quinolin-3-ium-1-olate derivative, formed via arylotropy. The structure requirements and side photoreactions of this novel photoswitching system are discussed.
