Community service program improved environmental awareness in children at an orphanage, indicating the value of integrating education with green activities.
This community service program aimed to strengthen environmental awareness among children at Putera Bonang Orphanage in Banjarmasin through respiration learning and green plant cultivation activities. The program was designed to provide a combination of scientific knowledge and practical experience, enabling children to understand the essential role of respiration in living organisms and the importance of green plants in sustaining environmental balance. Activities included interactive learning sessions on the biological process of respiration, followed by hands-on practices in planting and maintaining various green plants around the orphanage environment. The results of the program showed positive changes in the children’s attitudes, reflected in their increased enthusiasm for caring for plants and their deeper understanding of the relationship between respiration, plants, and the environment. These findings highlight that integrating science-based education with practical environmental activities can effectively nurture ecological sensitivity among children in orphanage settings. The program is expected to serve as a sustainable model for environmental education in similar institutions.
