Population

235 consecutive patients with essential hypertension (50.1% men and 49.9% women; mean age 51.9 ± 17.3 years), stratified by body mass index (BMI). Exclusion criteria included valvular or pericardial diseases, chronic liver disease, drug abuse, systemic corticosteroids, chronic kidney disease (eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2), and microalbuminuria >300 mg/day.
