Electric motors are the primary propulsion units in electric vehicles and play a decisive role in determining efficiency, performance, and driving characteristics. The selection of an appropriate motor type is therefore a critical design decision in electric vehicle development. Among various motor technologies, Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), and Induction Motors are the most widely used in electric vehicle applications. This review paper presents a comparative analysis of these three motor types based on performance parameters such as efficiency, torque characteristics, power density, cost, control complexity, and application suitability. The advantages and limitations of each motor type are discussed from a mechanical engineering perspective. This study aims to provide a clear and structured understanding of electric motor selection criteria for undergraduate students and researchers working in the field of electric mobility.
