Correlates ancient formations in Southern Siberia, suggesting clearer stratigraphic frameworks for Lower Precambrian units.
Regional schemes present the main tool for correlating local stratigraphic units of the Precambrian. They can be subdivided into three ranks: horizons, series, and synthems. Additional units are structural-formational megacomplexes. The subdivisions differ in mode of correlation and degree of its reliability. Their status allows the stratigraphic background of the Lower Precambrian to be shown more clearly and objectively, and the urgent problems of stratigraphic investigations to be posed. The Lower Precambrian· of Southern Siberia is proposed to be subdivided into four synthems, Siberian, Sakhaborean (Archean), Udokanian, and Akitkanian (Lower Proterozoic), and into series of megacomplexes.
