Abstract

Detailed magnetic survey (magnetometry) was chosen as the most efficient and effective method of locating the type of archaeological anomalies which might be expected at this site. All survey techniques followed the guidance set out by CIfA (2020) and the European Archaeology Council (EAC) (2016). Bartington Cart System Traverse Interval 1.0m Sample Interval 0.125m A detailed magnetometer survey was conducted over approximately 19 hectares of land south of the A507, west of Buntingford and it has revealed a number of anomalies of archaeological interest. They comprise a series of adjoining rectilinear enclosures, some with internal features including ring-ditches, as well as numerous small-discrete anomalies indicative of pits and small-scale industrial activity. The western extent of an enclosure detected through geophysical survey in the field immediately to the east has been mapped, along with an additional sub-rectangular enclosure. Numerous linear and curvilinear trends and discrete anomalies have an uncertain origin; they could be archaeological, agricultural or natural. Ridge and furrow, former field boundaries and a drain have been mapped, along with a possible former gravel pit.
