Evaluation reveals a historic pond and a field drain, suggesting significant archaeological activity.
Five evaluation trenches were dug to located and record the historic pond, as well as any potential Prehistoric features. The historic pond was identified in trench 3. First seen on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map and surviving until the late 20th century, were it was infilled by 1999. Due to safety concerns about live munitions present on the site, the pond was machine excavated and re-filled during 2023-2024. As such this removed any surviving deposits. A small single stone filled field drain was identified in trench 5. The site had been previously stripped, exposing a remnant plough soil in places, and excavating straight on to natural in others. No archaeological features were present in trenches 1,2 and 4.
