Archeological monitoring reveals no earlier dwelling at Brockington Cottage, suggesting limited historical activity in the area.
archeological monitoring and recording The excavations consisted of a series of deep strip foundations marking the outline of a four small extensions around each side of the building. There was no evidence from either the historic building survey or the excavations to indicate the presence of an earlier dwelling or activity within the site prior to the construction of the cottage itself around the C18. Although much of the soil stratigraphy around the building has been removed during the course the building's occupation, the underlying clay substrate appears to have survived relatively intact. Inside the building the cellar had been backfilled, but where it was exposed in the excavated trenches, it was shown to be 1.30m deep. The masonry foundation remains of a probable oven were observed adjacent to the northeast corner of the building.
