Key Points

  • The aim is to explore the maintenance and management processes within the UNICADO software for aircraft design.
  • Describes refactoring processes using the IMPACT method.
  • Outlines automated testing routines for code verification.
  • Details a standardized code review process for quality assurance.
  • Discusses coordination between team members using Phabricator.
  • Software refactoring led to a consistent structure in source code and comments.
  • Automated testing confirmed code functionality at the integration level.
  • Established guidelines improved code quality through systematic review processes.

Abstract

Abstract The high demand for reliable and adaptable aircraft design software requires software development procedures to ensure its sustainability, maintainability, and robustness. Therefore, various processes are defined in the conceptual aircraft design software UNICADO (University Conceptual Aircraft Design and Optimization). This paper focuses on refactoring, testing, review, and coordination within a cross-national collaboration and answers how these procedures are implemented in UNICADO. The established processes include, e.g., the IMPACT method for the refactoring . With that, the source code and comment style are consistently structured and open tasks are uniformly tracked. The testing routine enables checking whether the code behaves as expected. It is initially automated on the integration test level. The reviewing serves as a final quality assurance. A standardized code review process and guidelines are established in the UNICADO project. Additionally, the coordination within the software development and between team members in a distributed collaboration operates with the help of the management platform Phabricator .
