Abstract : The development of student autonomy and self-directed learning has become a key focus in modern education, emphasizing learners’ ability to take responsibility for their own learning process. This study examines the importance, strategies, and outcomes related to promoting autonomy and self-directed learning among students in higher education. The research highlights how independent learning skills enable students to set learning goals, select suitable strategies, monitor progress, and evaluate results without constant teacher oversight. Through an overview of pedagogical approaches such as inquiry-based learning, project- based learning, and reflective practices, the study demonstrates that autonomy enhances intrinsic motivation, critical thinking, and lifelong learning skills. The paper also explores the educator’s role in creating supportive environments that encourage choice, self-assessment, and collaboration while maintaining a balance between guidance and independence. Data gathered through surveys and classroom observations indicate that when students have opportunities to make learning decisions, they show increased engagement, improved academic performance, and greater self-efficacy. However, challenges such as insufficient preparation, overreliance on teachers, and limited metacognitive skills can hinder progress. The study concludes that integrating autonomy-supportive teaching methods and digital tools can effectively promote self-directed learning, preparing students to meet the changing demands of the 21st-century knowledge society. Overall, fostering student autonomy is essential not only for academic success but also for developing responsible, motivated, and lifelong learners.
