Comprehensive analysis examines currency distribution in traditional fiat and cryptocurrency markets, revealing significant trends.
This comprehensive study examines the global distribution of currencies across traditional fiat and cryptocurrency markets as of 2025. Through systematic analysis of data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and leading cryptocurrency exchanges, we present a detailed quantitative assessment of currency market shares. Our findings reveal that the US dollar maintains dominance at 56.32% of global reserves despite a gradual decline from historical peaks, while Bitcoin commands 57.34% of the cryptocurrency market capitalization. The study identifies significant shifts in currency dynamics, including the rise of non-traditional reserve currencies and the persistent growth of stablecoins. We analyze foreign exchange (forex) market structures, where daily turnover reached $9.6 trillion in April 2025, demonstrating a 28% increase from 2022. This research contributes to understanding the evolving landscape of global monetary systems and provides empirical evidence for policymakers, financial institutions, and researchers examining currency distribution patterns.
