Maritime industries pursuing International Maritime Organization’s 2050 decarbonization targets face complex challenges requiring simultaneous technological, educational, and professional transformation. This qualitative investigation examines sustainability adoption through perspectives of maritime industry experts and educational stakeholders via semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected participants. Results demonstrate strong sustainable technology adoption (8.2/10 composite score) while identifying significant educational alignment gaps, particularly in digital skills and bioresource applications. IoT monitoring systems achieved highest acceptance (9.2/10) by enhancing traditional maritime expertise, while hybrid propulsion and AI applications generated complex responses reflecting tension between innovation benefits and operational autonomy concerns. Findings reveal that successful maritime sustainability transitions depend upon coordinated evolution across technological capabilities, educational preparation, and professional acceptance, requiring modular curriculum development, technology designs that amplify professional expertise, and policy frameworks acknowledging implementation complexity within maritime professional cultures.
