This project investigates the interplay of physical and social environments on mental health outcomes in children, suggesting crucial factors for development.
The EU‐funded Equal‐Life project aimed to investigate the complexities of the physical and social exposome and their interplay in young peoples’ mental health and cognitive development in home and school settings - from birth to adolescence. This was achieved by the analysis of available data from eleven European cohorts and school studies adding up to nearly 250,000 children, enriched by exposure data of both physical and social environment and analysis of biomarkers in two cohorts (D5.5). Also, new data were collected in six tailored in-depth studies, addressing time activity patterns at different ages, school acoustics and effects on attention and learning, two sleep studies and a preschool study on cognitive effects in two countries (van Kamp et al., 2022). This report synthesizes the key results of these health effect analyses subdivided in: Untargeted analyses using Random Forest, Targeted analysis using Structural Equation Modeling, tailored in-depth studies and proteomics and metabolomics biomarker analysis in two cohorts using a range of statistical methods. This summary of results, presented as overarching findings, sketches the bigger picture of what we can learn from this project.
