Abstract Periodontitis is a multifaceted disease of the oral cavity characterized by various contributing factors, many of which are also common risk factors for other systemic noncommunicable diseases. It is treated with a variety of surgical and nonsurgical methods aimed at mitigating the progression of periodontal disease. There has been a changing paradigm in the treatment modalities from traditional to minimally invasive techniques in medical and dental fields. The minimally invasive surgery allows small incisions and the use of loupes and surgical operating microscope to provide quality treatment for patients. These techniques can be employed in high-risk patients and the elderly to leverage the advantages of reduced surgical trauma and enhanced postoperative function. In addition to various techniques, there has been an advent of the videoscope-assisted surgical system, perioscopy, and nanorobotics that enhance the overall standard of care. However, there is a need for more research and larger clinical trials for the application of minimally invasive surgical techniques (MISTs) in our day-to-day clinical practice. Therefore, this review emphasizes the various MISTs in periodontics and their future standpoints.
