Abstract

Abstract: This article examines how sex work, masculinity, intimacy, and alienation are presented as a 'performance act' in Patric Chiha's Brüder der Nacht (2016) and Ruth Beckermann's MUTZENBACHER (2022). In both films, boundaries between documentary and fiction, the real and the staged, become blurred as individual identity—in particular, the iterative performance of gender and sexuality—is set against the dynamics of the fraternal or homosocial groupings of the male ensemble. In this vein, this article draws on Fatima Naqvi's articulation of the 'choric configurations' of contemporary documentary to ask what it means for director, audience, and protagonist to make these voices heard in such a way that places the social and political contingencies of contemporary masculinity and sexuality centre stage. Abstract: Dieser Artikel betrachtet die Darstellung von Sexarbeit, Männlichkeit, Intimität und Entfremdung als eine Art 'Performance Act' in Patric Chihas Brüder der Nacht (2016) und Ruth Beckermanns MUTZENBACHER (2022).
