Continuous-wave radar for ocean wave measurement from coastal beaches

PLPau LuqueASAlberto Aguasca SoléTTTim C. Toomey

Key Points

  • This work aims to enhance ocean wave measurement and bathymetry assessment using continuous-wave radar.
  • Applied continuous-wave radar for ocean wave measurement.
  • Developed a novel analysis pipeline for data interpretation.
  • Focused on measuring the spatial cross-shore distribution along a sandy beach.
  • Successfully measured the amplitude wave spectrum of ocean waves.
  • Obtained bathymetric data of the nearshore environment.
  • Demonstrated advantages over traditional pulsed radar systems.

Abstract

In situ beach monitoring is a costly and hazardous task, which can be improved using remote sensing. Specifically, X-band radar can measure the nearshore wave field and bathymetry, although virtually only pulsed systems have been used to this end. This work presents the application of a continuous-wave radar and a novel analysis pipeline to measure the spatial cross-shore distribution of amplitude wave spectrum and bathymetry along a sandy beach.
