Based on three case studies of living forms coexisting in the Atacama Desert, we use a perspective of feminist care to analyze how humans and non-humans (cells) live, adapt or transform in the face of the effects of extractivism in northern Chile. Firstly, we analyze gender roles within the context of extractive mining in the Antofagasta region, including the role of madresposas (mother-wives) in the state mineral deposits of Chuquicamata and the role of sex workers in the nitrate ruins of Pampa Unión. Secondly, we examine forms of care provided by women in the Indigenous pastoral space of the Puna de Atacama. Finally, we analyze how female aquatic invertebrates (rotifers) from the Inka-Coya Lake react to threats on desert ecosystems by developing different forms of resistance to extractivism. These three cases each paradoxically show care practices associated with repair and adaptation aimed at sustaining life in highly intervened environments. As an alternative to the “technical masculine” approach typically used to analyze the exploitation of nitrate, copper, and lithium in northern Chile, this work helps us understand relationships of human and non-human communities with their environment. Basándonos en tres estudios de caso sobre formas de vida que coexisten en el desierto de Atacama, adoptamos una perspectiva de cuidados feministas para analizar cómo humanos y no humanos (células) viven, se adaptan o se transforman frente a los efectos del extractivismo en el norte de Chile. En primer lugar, analizamos los roles de género en el contexto de la minería extractiva en la región de Antofagasta, incluyendo el papel de las madresposas en los yacimientos minerales estatales de Chuquicamata y el rol de las trabajadoras sexuales en las ruinas salitreras de Pampa Unión. En segundo lugar, examinamos las formas de cuidado brindadas por mujeres en el espacio pastoril indígena de la Puna de Atacama. Finalmente, analizamos cómo invertebrados acuáticos hembra (rotíferos) del lago Inka-Coya reaccionan ante las amenazas a los ecosistemas desérticos desarrollando distintas formas de resistencia al extractivismo. Estos tres casos muestran, de manera paradójica, prácticas de cuidado asociadas a la reparación y la adaptación orientadas a sostener la vida en entornos altamente intervenidos. Como alternativa al enfoque “técnico masculino” que suele emplearse para analizar la explotación del salitre, el cobre y el litio en el norte de Chile, este trabajo contribuye a comprender las relaciones de comunidades humanas y no humanas con su entorno.
