Overview highlights asphalt pavement performance and material concepts in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, suggesting a unified approach.
Asphalt pavements in German-speaking countries are characterized by a strong normative framework, performance-oriented mixture design, and a pronounced life-cycle perspective. This publication provides a structured overview of asphalt pavement structures, material concepts, and performance-related requirements applied in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Particular emphasis is placed on polymer-modified binders, low-temperature and aging behavior, performance-based approaches (PBA/GVO), special surface course concepts such as roughened asphalts (AC MR), and non-traffic applications including surface sealing systems. The paper consolidates regulatory frameworks (EN, national annexes, and technical guidelines) with practical engineering experience. The contribution is intended as a compact technical reference for engineers, researchers, and decision-makers and facilitates international comparison and knowledge transfer of Central European asphalt pavement concepts. The publication represents an independent technical overview and does not constitute a peer-reviewed journal article.
