Revealing the direct role of cobalt in oxygen evolution reaction initiation over high-performance iridium-cobalt oxide catalysts

QLQianyu LinQSQintao SunHXHaojie Xu

Key Points

  • The central aim is to understand how cobalt influences the initiation of the oxygen evolution reaction in iridium-cobalt oxide catalysts.
  • Examined the role of cobalt ions and oxygen vacancies in iridium oxide catalysts
  • Analyzed charge redistribution effects
  • Investigated water dissociation and O–O intermediate coupling
  • Cobalt promotes effective water dissociation
  • Oxygen vacancies stabilize intermediate coupling
  • Charge redistribution facilitates the oxidation pathway mechanism

Abstract

Cobalt ions and oxygen vacancies in iridium oxide induce charge redistribution, enabling cobalt to promote water dissociation and facilitating O–O intermediate coupling, thus stabilizing the oxidation pathway mechanism in acidic media.
