This analysis selects sustainability indicators for resource efficiency in the blue bioeconomy, highlighting implications for sustainable practices.
A transition towards a circular economy for the blue bioeconomy can contribute to resource efficiency gains which are integral to sustainable development. This task 3.1 selected a set of indicators for sustainability assessments based on a review of existing indicators with a focus on the circularity approach for the selected SMARTCHAIN case studies (fisheries and aquaculture value chains). The framework selected was the Blue Economy Sustainability Framework which was further cross-referenced with the FAO’s sustainable bioeconomy indicators and the GRI standards. Two company sustainability reports were also examined to see what is being currently reported on in practice as a first indication of data availability. The final selection resulted in 35 indicators in the environmental dimension, 14 indicators in the economic dimension, 21 indicators in the social dimension and 20 indicators in the governance dimension
