Project develops multi-scale simulations to optimize plasma exhaust management, suggesting enhanced confinement.
Our project aims to develop new multi-scale and multi-physics simulation capabilities toachieve a fundamental understanding of boundary plasma dynamics. By utilizing advancedcomputation, theory, modeling, and phenomenology, our objective is to optimize tokamakplasma exhaust management while maintaining high confinement (H-mode) throughexperimental validation and rigorous code-code benchmarking. The four principal foci of the project are:(1)Pedestal turbulence,(2)Pedestal scrape-off layer (SOL) coupling and SOL width broadening,(3)Edge relaxation dynamics,(4)Divertor heat load control via detachment.Specifically, we will investigate the full cycle of bursting edge-localized modes (ELMs) toidentify the physical mechanisms underlying both large and small ELMs.
