Evaluation reveals low potential for significant archaeological remains in a proposed development area.
Evaluation trial trenching comprising 9 no. 20m by 1.8m trenches machine excavated and recorded in accordance with an approved Written Scheme of Investigation Underlying superficial geology comprising a Tidal Flat Deposit - Clays and silts was exposed in all nine evaluation trenches at a depth of between 0.40-0.65m BGL. The investigations revealed the presence of two linear features and several field drain alignments. A linear feature exposed within the base of Trench 6 contained a fill that was very similar to the surrounding geology, and it is possible this feature may represent a former natural channel. A linear feature was identified in section, at a very shallow depth within Trench 8 and contained a fill that was similar to topsoil. This feature appeared to align with a cropmark that was visible within the grass turf of the PDA and is also present on satellite and LiDAR imagery. Although this feature remains undated, as no artefacts were recovered from its fill, its presence at such a shallow depth strongly suggests a later post-medieval or modern date. The archaeological evaluation has revealed a negative to very low potential for buried archaeological remains within the proposed development area. No significant archaeological features or deposits were identified by the archaeological evaluation.
