A study reports rising gabapentin prescriptions in substance use disorder treatment, suggesting care improvements are needed.
A study published February 1 in Drug and Alcohol Dependence shows that prescriptions for gabapentin have increased significantly for individuals entering treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. According to the research, by Matthew S. Ellis and others and funded by Millennium Health — which conducts drug testing for SUD treatment programs — there is a lack of evidence for usefulness of gabapentin for SUD. In addition, the study found that gabapentin prescribing was associated with multiple physical and mental health comorbidities. The researchers called for better integrated care for those in SUD treatment, especially older adults.
