This conference paper proposes a novel method to teach phrasal verbs using visuals, suggesting improvements in learning effectiveness.
This conference paper was presented at the 2nd International Conference on University, Enterprise, and Society (UES), Madrid, Spain (June 2020). It proposes an innovative pedagogical approach to teaching English phrasal verbs through illustration and typographic personification. By integrating lexical form and semantic meaning into a single visual artefact, the method aims to reduce cognitive overload associated with verb–particle combinations. The paper outlines the pedagogical rationale, design principles and classroom applications of the approach. The ideas presented here subsequently developed into a more theoretically grounded and expanded book chapter: Doherty, P. & Kelly, M. (2020). Using illustration and personification to teach phrasal verbs. In F. Ubierna Gómez (Coord.), Nuevos estudios en educación, artes y negocios en una sociedad diversa (Editorial Fragua).
