Researchers synthesize lead halide phosphites demonstrating moderate birefringence in layered frameworks, suggesting potential optical applications.
Two lead halide phosphites, Pb 3 (HPO 3 )Cl 4 ·H 2 O and Pb 3 (HPO 3 ) 3 Cl 2 ·H 2 O, were synthesized with layered Pb–HPO 3 –Cl frameworks. Cooperative anisotropy from distorted Pb–O polyhedra and HPO 3 yields moderate birefringence, confirmed by experiment and DFT.
