Molecular design integrates energetic motifs to enhance detonation performance in compounds.
Designing molecular architectures that simultaneously deliver high energy density and good detonation performance remains a central challenge in the development of advanced energetic materials. Here, we demonstrate a molecular design strategy that integrates an N,N'-azo linkage and N-nitramino functionalities within a triazolone framework, yielding a new class of two high-energy-density compounds (2 and 3). Their structures were confirmed by NMR, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, compound 3 exhibits an excellent detonation performance (Dv = 9457 m s⁻¹, P = 39.2 GPa). Overall, this work demonstrates a design principle for coupling nitrogen-chain extension with nitramino substitution, which may contribute to the development of energetic compounds with improved detonation performance.
