Abstract

Abstract This review article explores the implementation and impact of electronic medical records (EMRs) in the anesthesiology department of a 750+ bedded teaching hospital in Gujarat, India. The introduction outlines the significance of EMRs in modern healthcare, emphasizing their dual role in education and clinical care. The current status of EMR adoption in India, particularly in Gujarat, is discussed, highlighting our hospital’s pioneering efforts in transitioning to a paperless EMR system over the past 2 years. A detailed examination of EMRs and electronic health records is provided, elucidating their similarities and differences. The article further delineates the multifaceted applications of EMRs in anesthesiology, including preoperative assessments, intraoperative documentation, and postoperative follow-ups. The advantages of EMRs, such as enhanced workflow efficiency, long-term benefits, and medicolegal protections, are critically analyzed. Comparisons are drawn between traditional paper-based records and modern EMR systems, showcasing the superior efficiency of digital solutions.
