Proposal demonstrates lignin valorization methods using reactive extrusion for continuous flow bio-vitrimers, indicating improvements in green chemistry practices.
This proposal presents SESHAT’s LIGNIN, a revolutionary approach to lignin valorization through the synthesis of Quadruple-Function Modified Hemp Lignin (QFMHL). By integrating maleinization and Mannich amination into a single-pass, solvent-free Reactive Extrusion (REX) process, we achieve > 98% grafting density of functional moieties while adhering to all twelve principles of Green Chemistry. The innovation lies in the “telescoping” of two distinct chemical transformationsesterification and amination—within a modular twin-screw extruder configured with specialized screw elements (Hastelloy C-276). This continuous flow methodology eliminates organic solvents, reduces reaction times from hours to minutes, and achieves an E-factor approaching unity, representing a paradigm shift from batch chemistry to industrialscale continuous manufacturing. QF-MHL exhibits four synergistic functionalities: (1) carboxylic acid groups from maleic anhydride for ionic crosslinking, (2) amine groups from the Mannich reaction for epoxy curing, (3) residual phenolic hydroxyls for antioxidant activity, and (4) unsaturated bonds for radical polymerization. These properties enable applications in catalyst-free bio-vitrimers, structural composites, and slow-release nitrogen fertilizers. This proposal details: (1) scientific rationale and mechanism, (2) laboratory-scale optimization (10-100 g/batch), (3) industrial-scale continuous processing (2-4 kg/hr), (4) equipment specifications and sourcing, (5) Standard Operating Procedures with regulatory compliance (OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, WHMIS 2025), (6) economic analysis, and (7) intellectual property strategy. The technology readiness level progresses from TRL 4 (laboratory validation) to TRL 6 (pilot demonstration) within 18 months.
