Abstract

During the four hundred years of history since Macao opened its port, music of Macau, as the artistic sign of perfect combination of Chinese culture and western culture, has witnessed and outlined the external image and inner mechanisms of social cultures in Macau. Music of Macau includes both the native music based on Chinese culture and the foreign music cultures of Portugal, as well as other western nations. Based on the previous research results of some scholars and references from Michel Foucault’s discourse power theory, the authors of this thesis have put forward the viewpoint of four dimensional theoretical transitions of music narration in Macao over the past four hundred years, that is, transition from gradual spread of western music to the East as Chinization of western music; transition from the Western connotations of music aesthetics to pluralistic coexistence; transition from the Western etiquette of music life to that of the Western and Chinese compatibility; transition from the total Western music educational system to Chinese-oriented educational system with western supplements. The thesis is to clarify the evolution and academic landscape of musical discourse powers in Macao under the dual dimensions of both history and culture of China and the western countries.
