Monitoring excavation for gas main replacement in Edinburgh revealed historical features, indicating preservation needs.
This report contains the results of an archaeological watching brief on the replacement of a low pressure gas main on Castlehill, Edinburgh on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council. This is a continuation of a previous phase of work undertaken in 2012 to 2013. The excavation of a new track for the modern polyethylene pipes was undertaken as permitted works, and with Scheduled Monument Consent, from the Johnson Terrace Roundabout to the Esplanade. The works uncovered two previously recorded features in addition to two more cut features and a sandstone culvert. No further works are considered necessary.
