Orientation derives consciousness from the minimal conditions required for a system to maintain coherence in a non‑uniform world. The paper argues that orientation—defined as a boundary responding to gradients through ordered mobility—is the first functional operation of any living system. From the growth cone navigating chemical asymmetries to the mind navigating a field of possibilities, the same structural logic persists: systems preserve themselves by regulating orientation under perturbation. As this operation becomes continuous, recursive, and temporally extended, it scales into what we recognize as consciousness. Experience, identity, and agency emerge not as separate faculties but as refinements of this single architectural primitive.
