Analysis reveals economic benefits of informal cross-border trade in South Africa, suggesting policy improvement.
Informal cross-border trade (ICT) plays a significant role in regional integration within ECOWAS, but its impact on South Africa is less explored. The analysis employs regression models to examine the relationship between ICT flows and macroeconomic indicators in South Africa. South African firms engaged in ICT with ECOWAS member states experienced a 15% increase in exports compared to those not involved, indicating significant economic benefits. Despite challenges such as regulatory barriers, South Africa stands to gain from increased integration through enhanced trade links. Policymakers should consider removing bureaucratic hurdles and fostering regional cooperation to maximise the potential of ICT within ECOWAS.
